MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Work is due to begin within a month on a Muncie project aimed at providing housing for people in need of support services such as some veterans, disabled and people at risk of being homeless, officials said.

The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority recently awarded the project, called Walnut Commons, the low-income housing tax credits that it needs to go forward, Gerry Cyranowski, vice president of clinical services at Meridian Health Services, told The Star Press for a story published Sunday (http://tspne.ws/1kfRolM ).

Meridian, a nonprofit, will provide the residents of the 44-unit, $7 million downtown apartment building with health care, addiction treatment and other services to help them stay independent.

“It’s been a long, arduous process,” Cyranowski said. “We’ve been planning this upwards of three years. Now it’s finally going to happen.”

UP Development LLC of Chicago will develop, own and operate Walnut Commons, which is expected to take its first tenants during the spring of 2015. The first step in the construction of the building will be the demolition of several vacant buildings at the site across the street from the Muncie Fieldhouse.

The one-bedroom and studio apartments will cater to people who can live independently but need supportive services, including veterans and people with disabilities or at risk for homelessness. The Veterans Administration also is a partner in the project and will screen potential residents, as will Meridian and the IHCDA.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will subsidize the rents.

Similar supportive housing projects have been built in Indianapolis, Kokomo and Fort Wayne.
