Let’s follow Gen Z who are leading the way on health focus

From Star Press:

Every new year brings an opportunity to recharge, restore and reset. We’re back from the holidays. We’ve had time with friends and family. And maybe we’re even thinking about the future.

The new year is a great time to reset and refocus, especially on your health. By the way, taking care of yourself means you’re taking care of your family, your coworkers, and your community.

Indiana ranks 10th from the bottom in the country in healthy measurements. In our state, rates of smoking, obesity, chronic diseases, infant mortality, drug deaths, cancer, and premature deaths are among the worst in the nation.

COVID-19 continues put a stress on each of us, often in unique ways. This includes keeping up with vaccines and boosters, as well as being caregivers to those who become ill and making daily efforts to take care of ourselves.

The youngest of us, Gen Z, are resolving to get fit, too. A survey by Instagram found that this generation have three priorities in 2024. They are:

  • Stay healthy, including working out often and eating healthy meals
  • Exploring a career path
  • Traveling

I love that it that young people are leading the way. Let’s join them! Wondering where to start? You can follow this link of tips from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention to get all the details. But here a few:

  • Make an appointment for a checkup
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water
  • Make healthy food choices
  • Get active
  • Use hand sanitizer
  • Be smokefree
  • Get enough sleep

Meridian’s primary care offices, behavioral health clinics, pediatric physicians, dental services, and specialized programming are available and taking new patients. Similarly, you can find resources at IU Ball Memorial Hospital and Open Door Health Services. The point is commit to your health in 2024. Take advantage of the trusted physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, technicians, clinicians, mental health providers, dentists, and other staff in our community.

I arrived at Meridian last summer. I’m still learning about all the integrated care of services we offer but no one can argue with our philosophy of “whole-person health.” Let’s promise each other that in 2024, we’ll put our physical health, our mental health and our social health front and center.

Happy New Year.
